Moxy Hotel Bergen is one of those hotels that immediately feels different from a classic city hotel. We booked it only one day before arrival, mainly because we wanted to stay in Bergen without spending a crazy amount of money. Bergen can get expensive fast, especially during a road trip through Norway, so finding a modern hotel with a good location and a fair price felt like a smart move.
The hotel is located at Solheimsgaten 3, 5058 Bergen, Norway, close to the water and not too far from the city center. For us, the location worked really well. We used Voi electric scooters during our stay, just like we did in other larger cities and urban areas on the trip. From Moxy Hotel Bergen, the ride into central Bergen took around 15 minutes, which made the hotel feel practical without being right in the busy tourist core.
Moxy Hotel Bergen First Impression
The check in at Moxy Hotel Bergen went smoothly. We arrived, got everything sorted quickly, and soon had access to our room. The lobby immediately showed what kind of hotel this is. The music was loud, the atmosphere was energetic, and the whole place felt more like a youth focused hotel than a traditional hotel for adults or families.
That is not automatically a bad thing. It just depends on what you are looking for. Moxy Hotel Bergen clearly goes for a social, modern, slightly playful hotel concept. Even the elevator had themed details, which made the experience feel more designed than standard. It gave the hotel personality, but also made it clear that this is not a quiet classic family hotel.
Room 221 at Moxy Hotel Bergen
We stayed in room 221 at the front side of Moxy Hotel Bergen. When we entered, the television was already turned on with a personal “Welcome Timo” message and information about our stay. That small detail made the room feel more personal right away.
The room itself looked great. It had an industrial style, with details on the walls, raw concrete elements, and a clean modern look. It felt simple, but not boring. The design matched the Moxy concept perfectly, compact, stylish, and built around comfort rather than unnecessary luxury.
The air conditioning was very good, which is always a major plus after walking or riding around a city. The beds were very comfortable, and as requested, the beds were separated so we could both sleep separately. That was arranged perfectly. For a practical hotel stay, that kind of detail matters.
Bathroom, Amenities, and Comfort
The bathroom at Moxy Hotel Bergen was clean, modern, and comfortable. It had mini lotions and shampoos from Muk, which could be used during the stay. The bathroom was not huge, but it felt well designed and pleasant.
This is where Moxy Hotel Bergen worked well for me. It does not try to be an old fashioned luxury hotel. Instead, it focuses on a cool room, good basics, nice design, and a comfortable bed. For a short Bergen stay, that is exactly what we needed.
Bar Moxy, Food, Beer, and Waterfront Chilling
The bar downstairs was one of the best parts of Moxy Hotel Bergen. It works more like a café or bar than a traditional hotel restaurant. You order at the bar, pick up your food and drinks there, and then find a place to sit.
We had lasagna and good draft beer, and later in the evening we ordered chicken wings with a pilsner as a late night snack. Peter took a plate of nachos. The food was casual, simple, and exactly the kind of thing that fits the atmosphere of the hotel.
The best part was being able to chill near the water. Since Moxy Hotel Bergen is located by the waterfront, the outdoor area gives the hotel a relaxed city by the fjord feeling. It is not a mountain cabin or a quiet fjord lodge, but for Bergen, it gives a nice mix of urban energy and waterside calm.
Why Moxy Hotel Bergen Feels Different
Moxy Hotel Bergen is part of Moxy Hotels, a Marriott brand focused on playful, social, and affordable style. The concept is clearly aimed at younger travelers, city trippers, couples, friend groups, and people who like hotels with personality. The check in experience, the bar, the music, the lobby, and the room design all fit that idea.
This makes Moxy Hotel Bergen interesting. It is absolutely aimed at younger guests, but it still works well for couples or friends who want a fun and modern hotel. For families with children, I would personally recommend looking at another hotel. The atmosphere is too bar focused and too loud for a classic family stay. It is not impossible, but it would not be my first recommendation for kids.
Breakfast at Moxy Hotel Bergen
The breakfast at Moxy Hotel Bergen was fine, but not amazing. There were options, but not a huge amount. It had a little bit of everything, bread, Kellogg’s cereal, fruit, and some basic breakfast items. The setup felt small, with compact areas where everything was placed.
For a quick breakfast before heading into Bergen, it did the job. But if breakfast is one of the most important parts of a hotel stay for you, this might feel a bit limited. The coffee was also not great in our opinion. Both of us felt that it could have been better.
Alcohol Rules in Norway and the 0.00 Percent Beer
At the reception, we bought a 0.00 percent Carlsberg beer. The reason was simple, the hotel could not sell or hand over alcoholic beer to take away because of Norwegian alcohol rules.
Norway has strict alcohol laws. A bar or hotel with a serving license can serve alcohol for consumption on the licensed premises, but that does not mean guests can just buy alcoholic beer from the bar and take it away like a normal shop purchase. For takeaway alcohol sales, different retail rules and licenses apply. So in practice, a hotel bar may serve you beer to drink there, but not necessarily sell you alcoholic beer to take with you to your room or outside the premises.
That made the 0.00 percent beer a logical option. It is one of those small travel moments where Norway feels very different from many other European countries.
Parking and the Booking.com Payment Issue
Parking at Moxy Hotel Bergen was not free. We parked at Solheimsgaten 11, 5058 Bergen, Norway, which is about 100 meters, 328 feet, from the hotel. That was close enough to be practical, but it is worth knowing in advance because parking costs can add up in Norwegian cities.
Check out went fine, and we paid the bill. However, something strange happened afterward. The hotel charged the amount again through Booking.com, even though Booking.com had shown “pay on spot.” That was annoying and took a long time to fix. I only got the money back after around one to two months, when the issue was finally resolved.
That does not ruin the hotel stay itself, but it is important to mention in an honest Moxy Bergen review. The stay was good, but the payment handling afterward was not ideal.
Why Bergen Is Worth Visiting
Bergen is one of the most beautiful and atmospheric cities in Norway. It is surrounded by mountains and water, and it feels like a natural gateway to the fjords. The city has a mix of old wooden buildings, harbor life, steep streets, viewpoints, cafés, and rainy coastal charm.
Popular places to visit include Bryggen, the historic waterfront area with colorful wooden buildings, the Fish Market, the Fløibanen funicular to Mount Fløyen, and the harbor area. Bergen is also a good starting point for fjord trips, road trips, and coastal adventures. For us, it was a great city to explore by electric scooter, especially because the hotel was not directly in the busiest tourist zone.
What Else Moxy Hotel Bergen Offers
Besides the room, bar, and waterfront location, Moxy Hotel Bergen also offers modern hotel basics like free WiFi, a fitness center, smart room features, USB plugs, and Chromecast on the TV. That makes it convenient if you want to stream something, charge multiple devices, or just relax after a long travel day.
The hotel also has the typical Moxy lobby feeling, with social spaces made for hanging out rather than just passing through. This is part of what makes Moxy Hotels different from many standard hotel chains. The lobby is not only a reception area, it is also a bar, lounge, workspace, and social zone.
Final Verdict, Is Moxy Hotel Bergen Worth It?
Moxy Hotel Bergen is worth staying at if you want a modern, casual, and energetic hotel in Bergen. The room was stylish and comfortable, the air conditioning was excellent, the beds were properly arranged as requested, and the bar downstairs was a fun place to eat, drink, and relax by the water.
The downsides are also clear. The lobby music was loud, the hotel feels strongly aimed at younger travelers, the breakfast was only average, parking was not free, and the Booking.com payment issue was frustrating. For couples, friends, and younger travelers, I would still recommend it. For families with kids, I would probably choose something quieter.
For us, Moxy Hotel Bergen worked well. It gave us a comfortable room, a good base for exploring Bergen, easy scooter access to the city center, and a fun place to chill after a long day. It is not a perfect hotel, but it is a memorable one
