The bathroom had clearly been used recently. There were wet towels, the floor was wet, and it did not feel prepared for new guests. Based on the note and the general state of the house, it seemed possible that the previous guests had left shortly before we arrived, but that is only our own impression.
The living room and kitchen were also not properly cleaned. Around the fireplace, there were wood chips, crumbs, and signs of heavy use. In a strange way, that also meant we could easily get the fire going, but it still showed that nobody had prepared the space properly.
The kitchen was under-equipped. We wanted to use baking paper, but only found an empty cardboard box where it should have been. We went to the local Coop in the village and bought a new roll ourselves. Normally, I would leave something like that behind for the next guests. In this case, I did not. This stay did not earn that level of goodwill.

The fireplace was fantastic. That part of the stay really worked. We sat by the fire, enjoyed the warmth, had a beer and some chips, and for a moment the whole place felt exactly like the kind of remote, cozy stay you hope for in Sweden.
There was something very satisfying about making the fire and keeping it going. After a long day on the road, that fireplace gave the evening some comfort. It created the atmosphere the rest of the Airbnb should have supported.

The house itself was large. The kitchen and living room had plenty of space, the television was nice, and the central fireplace gave the interior character. There was also a conservatory with views over the surrounding nature. That was one of the nicest parts of the property.
A binocular was left there, and I did use it to look out over the area. When something like that is left in a scenic place, it almost invites you to use it. The surrounding nature was beautiful, and the setting was one of the strongest parts of this stay.

A Quiet Night After A Long Drive
We had driven around 6 to 7 hours that day. As the driver, that kind of travel day takes a lot of focus. The person I was traveling with went to bed earlier, tired from the long day. The bedroom door closed well, and the room seemed nicely soundproofed. I could keep my music on for a while without it being a problem.
Around 11 PM, when the fire had gone out, I also went to bed. The sleep itself was okay, and the bed we used seemed comfortable. But a decent night of sleep does not erase the poor arrival experience.
No Breakfast, No Extra Cleaning
We did not have breakfast there. We also did not clean the house the way I normally would. I have stayed in around 40 other Airbnbs, and I usually leave a place clean and respectful. Here, the phrase “leave it as you found it” was not difficult to follow.
That is not meant as a joke only. It says something about the condition we found the property in. When guests arrive and feel like they are cleaning up after someone else, the stay has already failed.

The worst part was not even the mess itself. The biggest issue was the complete lack of response from the host. We reported what happened and received no meaningful reply. A simple message would have changed a lot. Even a short apology would have shown that the host understood the problem.
