Seim Camping Røldal was one of those simple roadtrip stops that ended up feeling much more memorable than expected. Located in Røldal, Norway, close to the lake Røldalsvatnet and surrounded by mountains, this campsite gave us exactly what we needed, a quiet place to pitch two small tents, cook a simple barbecue, take a warm shower, and experience real camping for the first time.
We booked Seim Camping Røldal online by email, and when we arrived, the reception felt like it was part of a private home. That immediately gave the place a personal and local feeling. We rang the bell, friendly people welcomed us, and after paying for the campsite and electricity, we were allowed to choose our own spot on the field.

The campsite is known for having a bakery, but during our morning, it was closed. That was a little disappointing, because fresh baked goods at a campsite in Norway would have been a perfect start. The reception was also not open and unfortunately unreachable at that moment.
Because of that, we went back to the Coop in Røldal. Again, it was useful to have a supermarket nearby. When you are camping light, especially without proper cooking equipment, a local store becomes part of the experience.
In the sanitary building, we also had a nice chat with a Dutch couple who were traveling around in a beautiful camper. That made us slightly jealous, in the best way. They had the kind of setup that makes roadtripping look effortless, with comfort, space, and freedom all in one vehicle.
What Makes Seim Camping Røldal Worth It
For me, Seim Camping Røldal worked because it felt honest. It was not overdone, not fake, and not trying to be something it is not. It is a peaceful campsite in a beautiful part of Norway, with enough facilities to make your stay easy, but still enough simplicity to make it feel like real camping.
The location is also strong. Røldal is a small but interesting place, with mountain scenery, Røldalsvatnet nearby, hiking options, and the historic Røldal stave church close enough to visit. If you are on a roadtrip through Norway, this is exactly the kind of stop that makes sense. You can arrive, choose a spot, cook something simple, sleep under the sky, shower in the morning, and continue the journey feeling refreshed.

If you stay at Seim Camping Røldal with only a tent, think carefully before paying extra for electricity. If you only need to sleep, cook on a disposable barbecue, and charge your phone in the car or with a power bank, you probably do not need it.
Bring basic camping tools. Plates, forks, a lighter, a knife, a trash bag, and something to sit on can already make a huge difference. We were lucky that picnic benches were available, but you should not fully depend on that.
Also, keep smoke and wind direction in mind when barbecuing near your tent. My tent smelled like hamburgers for quite a while, and although that sounds funny now, it was not ideal before sleeping.
