Staying in the Hollywood Hills: A Bucket-List Experience Above Los Angeles

Hollywood Hills hotel Los Angeles, in the middle of Hollywood Hills, just a few blocks away for the populair Hollywood Boulevard! Some places immediately feel special, and for us, staying in the Hollywood Hills had always been one of those long-term bucket-list dreams. After previously staying in an Airbnb deeper inside the city, we wanted something that felt more iconic, something that truly matched the idea of living in Hollywood, even if just for a short while. Finding a hotel in the Hollywood Hills felt like the perfect upgrade.

For two nights and two people, we paid $420 USD. That’s slightly above what we’d normally budget, but realistically, how often do you get to sleep and wake up in one of the most legendary neighborhoods in Los Angeles? From that perspective, the price felt acceptable, you’re paying for location, atmosphere, and the experience itself.

Digital Check-In, Parking & First Impressions Hollywood Hills Hotel Los Angeles

The hotel, Hollywood Hills Hotel Los Angeles, operates almost entirely digitally. Check-in was handled through an online page shared via Booking.com, including uploading passport details. That’s something worth mentioning upfront: if you’re uncomfortable with online passport verification or simply don’t trust that process, this hotel probably isn’t for you. Room access is fully keyless. You receive a door code, and you can also unlock the door using your phone’s NFC chip. It feels modern and convenient, but there’s a downside: if your phone battery dies and you don’t have the code memorized, access becomes an issue. Keep your phone charged — or remember the code.

Parking was the most confusing part of arrival. At first, we genuinely thought we had ended up at an Asian restaurant and drove away, only to realize later that we were actually in the correct place. That mistake resulted in an unnecessary loop through busy Hollywood traffic on a crowded day.

Once inside the gates of Hollywood Hills Hotel Los Angeles, parking became straightforward. Entry appears to work via a combination of code and license plate recognition, though it wasn’t entirely clear how it detected our Toyota Camry 2024. Some parking spots are assigned to specific room or house numbers — something we only noticed the next day — but there are clearly marked free spots available. Parking is free, and you can enter and leave the property whenever you want.

The Room: Space, Comfort & Clear Trade-Offs

The room inside Hollywood Hills Hotel Los Angeles, the one we got, itself is large and spacious, which immediately stood out positively. The beds were big, comfortable, and the bedding was very clean and fresh-smelling — exactly what you want after long travel days in LA.

That said, the room felt surprisingly empty. While there were some decorative plants, there were also visible signs of wear: damage to the kitchen area, odd marks on the floor, and a general lack of finishing. Storage is minimal — there’s no proper wardrobe — which means you’re essentially living out of your suitcase, likely placed on the floor for the entire stay.

The kitchen setup was basic at best. Think camping-style equipment rather than a full apartment kitchen. For the price and room size, a proper full-size kitchen would have made much more sense. Cooking real meals here isn’t very practical.

The balcony was also underwhelming. The walking surface felt thin rather than solid, the chairs were damaged with loose ropes, and the railing didn’t feel fully stable. It’s usable, but not a place where you’d truly relax for long.

Bathroom Issues & Overall Maintenance

The bathroom itself looked modern and clean, but there was one major issue: the bathroom window could not be closed. Because of this, insects made their way inside the room. Finding a large moth inside the shower was definitely not part of the Hollywood luxury fantasy.

The shower experience was fine — not bad, but not particularly comfortable either. Combined with the maintenance issues around the property, it became clear that upkeep isn’t the hotel’s strongest point. The terrain itself is rough, with damaged asphalt and remnants of what once was a staircase that seems partially removed due to roadwork or layout changes. Drive carefully — the surface quality honestly feels comparable to an average Belgian road. Hollywood Hills Hotel Los Angeles could actually try to improve these things, to offer more to their quests.

Location, Food Options & The Hollywood Feeling

Location-wise, this hotel is fantastic. Within 3 to 5 minutes walking, you’re on Hollywood Boulevard. That alone makes the stay incredibly appealing.

There’s no breakfast service at the hotel, and given the limited kitchen and seating options, eating elsewhere is the logical choice. Nearby, there’s a Target with a Starbucks, perfect for grabbing coffee and breakfast items like sandwiches (yes, even Gouda cheese). We also visited Beachwood Café in Beachwood, which we highly recommend for a proper breakfast. For big meals, maybe the Yamashiro Hollywood Restaurant is your destination, just above the hotel itself.

There’s little to no visible staff on site. During our entire stay, we didn’t see any employees, and it’s unclear whether the restaurant above the property is connected to the hotel or operates independently.

The hotel does feature a swimming pool, but it clearly isn’t the main focus of the property. Information about the pool is limited, and it doesn’t appear prominently promoted or documented online. During our stay, the pool felt more like an additional amenity rather than a central part of the experience. It’s there if you want to cool down after a long day in Los Angeles, but it doesn’t add a resort-like atmosphere or luxury feel to the stay. Given the strong emphasis on views, location, and privacy, the pool seems more functional than memorable, a nice extra, but not something you’d book this hotel for specifically.

The View: Where Everything Comes Together

And then there’s the view — the real reason this place works.

From one side, you look out over Los Angeles, with downtown glowing in the distance at night. On the other side, you’re surrounded by the Hollywood Hills themselves. After dark, the city lights stretch endlessly, helicopters occasionally fly by, and for a moment, you genuinely feel like a movie star living above the city.

It’s cinematic, iconic, and undeniably unforgettable.

Final Verdict

This Hollywood Hills hotel isn’t flawless. Maintenance issues, minimal amenities, and the lack of on-site staff are clear downsides. But if your priorities are location, space, and an unforgettable Hollywood Hills view, this stay delivers a very real bucket-list experience.

It’s imperfect — but very, very LA.
