De Hompesche Molen is one of those places where the setting does a lot of the heavy lifting, and honestly, that is not a bad thing at all. Sitting near Stevensweert, right by the Molenplas area, De Hompesche Molen combines a historic windmill, a casual food stop, and a surprisingly useful event location in one spot. It is also the highest windmill in Limburg, around 37 meters high, and that alone already gives the place a strong identity.
Why De Hompesche Molen stands out
What makes De Hompesche Molen worth visiting is not only the mill itself, but the full setting around it. This is a 300 year old national monument on the Island in the Maas near Stevensweert, surrounded by green space, walking routes, and the Molenplas nature area. That makes it feel more like a proper outing than a quick coffee stop. The combination of heritage, water, open landscape, and maintained walking routes gives the place real strength.
There is also more going on here than many first time visitors might expect. Families can use the OERRR nature play area next to the terrace, walkers and cyclists use it as a break point, and the mill itself is still part of the experience rather than just background decoration. On Saturday afternoons, the miller is regularly at work, which adds even more character to the visit.

De Hompesche Molen keeps the food and drink offer fairly simple, which fits the location. The menu includes Limburg pie, soup of the day, a grilled sausage sandwich, a boeren tosti, loaded fries with truffle mushroom sauce or Limburg style zuurvlees, bitterballen, mixed fried snacks, kids options, coffee, tea, soft drinks, beer, and wine. In other words, this is not a high end restaurant concept, but a practical brasserie style stop for lunch, pie, drinks, and a relaxed break during a walk or bike ride.
That simple setup is actually fine, because tasteful food is enough here. My own visit proved that. The food itself was solid, better than the overall service experience. That is also how I would frame De Hompesche Molen in a fair way, come here for the setting first, the history second, and the food as a nice extra. When everything runs smoothly, that formula works very well.

This is where De Hompesche Molen becomes more than just a brasserie. The location is actively used for weddings, meetings, workshops, team building, staff parties, family gatherings, baby celebrations, and other group events. There are multiple indoor and outdoor spaces, custom catering options, and the place can open outside normal hospitality hours for private events. That makes it much more versatile than it looks from the outside.
For groups, the area around the mill adds real value. Guided walks, scooter tours, tastings, and other activities are part of the wider offer, so this is one of those places where the landscape helps sell the event. A meeting here feels less boxed in. A wedding here gets a more natural backdrop. A family gathering has room to breathe. That is probably one of the smartest things about the whole concept.

The reason De Hompesche Molen has so much presence is simple, it has been there for a long time. The current mill dates back to 1721 and 1722 and was commissioned by Count Van Hompesch, which is also where the name comes from. After completion, it served as the banmolen for the lordship of Stevensweert. One striking detail is that part of the lower section could even function as a prison space.
In more recent years, De Hompesche Molen gained a second life. Natuurmonumenten became the owner in 2014, and together with the municipality of Maasgouw the mill and milling equipment were renovated in 2015. That restoration helped secure the site for the long term and explains why the mill now feels both historic and usable instead of old and forgotten. It is known today as the highest tower mill in Limburg, and that is exactly the kind of fact that gives the place regional status.
My honest take on De Hompesche Molen
My honest experience is a bit mixed, and that is exactly why this place is interesting to write about. The interior design is actually nice. It looks good, it has charm, and the mill setting gives it something memorable. At the same time, the inside felt quite empty to me, and the terrace is relatively small. That would not be a big issue on its own, but on a nice weather day the kitchen clearly struggled.
We did not ask for anything complicated, just something as basic as a ham and cheese tosti, and still it took too long. The pie was also served incorrectly, which was disappointing. To be fair, staff had already mentioned things could take a while, so the most likely explanation is that the place was simply understaffed or badly planned for a busy sunny day. That does not make the experience great, but it does make it understandable. The bigger problem is not that it was busy, but that the operation did not seem ready for the kind of rush that should have been easy to predict.
Still, I would not write De Hompesche Molen off after one visit. The location is strong, the area around Molenplas is genuinely beautiful, the walking paths nearby are well worth it, and parking is easy and free. In that sense, the place still has enough going for it to deserve another chance. For me, the location won, the food was decent, and the service side simply needs to catch up.

De Hompesche Molen is not a flawless restaurant experience, at least not based on my visit. But it is still a very worthwhile place in Limburg because the total package is bigger than the food alone. You are getting history, nature, walking routes, a recognizable landmark, free parking, and a venue that clearly works well for weddings, meetings, and groups.
So the final verdict is pretty simple. De Hompesche Molen is absolutely worth visiting for the setting and surroundings, and it has enough charm to leave a positive impression. The only real weak point is that the service and kitchen pace need to match the quality of the location, because the location itself is already doing its job very well.
