Back To Basic Zwaanshoek is exactly what the name promises. A place where comfort is reduced to the essentials, distractions fade away, and a short stay suddenly feels much longer, in the best possible way. When my girlfriend and I booked one night here, we were simply looking for a unique weekend escape. What we found was a surprisingly calming experience in the heart of North Holland.

We discovered Back To Basic Zwaanshoek through Booking.com while browsing for something different from the usual hotels. Zwaanshoek itself is not a busy destination, and that actually makes this stay work so well. You come here to slow down, breathe, and reset.

A Unique Overnight Stay in Zwaanshoek

Back To Basic Zwaanshoek is located at Spieringweg 1210, 2136 LR Zwaanshoek, Netherlands. The location feels rural, yet it sits surprisingly close to major nature areas and the coast. The property offers several accommodation options, ranging from simple cabins to tents with Scandinavian themed names inspired by cities, countries, and regions such as Finland.

We chose the most affordable and simplest option available. That meant having our own former horse stable, converted into a private sleeping space with a small living area. No luxury, no excess, just the basics.

Our Private Stable Room Experience

The room itself was extremely minimal, but honest. Inside, we found a solid wooden double bed with a properly made mattress. The bed was relatively large and comfortable, which immediately made the stay feel more welcoming than expected.

There was electricity, but no running water in the room. Heating was available, which made a big difference, especially during cooler evenings. The furniture consisted of a wooden table and a wooden bench. The bench had no cushions, which we personally found a downside, especially when sitting for longer periods. Still, everything served its purpose.

One of the most unique elements was the door. It was a real horse stable door, split horizontally, which gave the room a rustic and almost cinematic vibe. It made the stay feel special and different from anything you would find in a standard hotel.

Shared Facilities and Practical Details

Back To Basic Zwaanshoek does not offer private bathrooms for this accommodation type. Instead, there are two shared shower cabins on the property, each equipped with a shower, sink, and toilet. This setup works fine, but it does require some planning.

Towels are not included, which can be inconvenient if you are not prepared. Fortunately, we had alternatives with us, but it is something future guests should keep in mind when booking.

Communication and Payment Experience

We did not meet the owner in person during our stay, which initially felt a bit unusual. However, all communication via WhatsApp and Booking.com messages was friendly, fast, and clear. The owner came across as genuinely kind and helpful.

Payment was split into two parts. One part was paid online through Booking.com, and the remaining amount was handled separately via WhatsApp using a Rabobank payment link. This felt informal, but it worked smoothly and without any issues.

The Surroundings of Zwaanshoek

Zwaanshoek itself is a small village with limited facilities. You will not find busy shopping streets or nightlife here. What you do find is peace, open space, and easy access to nature.

Nearby, there are cycling routes, walking paths, and green landscapes typical of North Holland. The village has a local atmosphere and functions mainly as a residential area, which adds to the quiet charm.

Beaches and Nature Close By

One of the biggest advantages of staying at Back To Basic Zwaanshoek is how much there is to do nearby. We immediately headed to the Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen, a stunning nature reserve known for its dunes, wildlife, and endless walking routes. This area alone is worth visiting and offers a completely different experience from the city.

We also visited the beach in Noordwijk, which is only a short drive away. Wide beaches, fresh sea air, and plenty of space made it a perfect complement to the simplicity of our stay.

Dining Experiences, What to Skip

When it comes to food, we kept things simple. We ordered from Friethuis de Vlaminck in Heemstede (NL), but honestly, this is not something we would recommend. The restaurant was no longer listed on Thuisbezorgd, which we discovered afterward. The delivery experience was unpleasant, the food quality was very poor, and overall it was deeply disappointing.

In hindsight, this actually reinforced the idea of planning meals ahead when staying here, or driving to nearby towns with better dining options such as Hoofddorp, Haarlem, or Noordwijk.

Pricing and Value for Money

Back To Basic Zwaanshoek is clearly positioned as a budget friendly stay with character. Prices for the simpler accommodations generally range from approximately 70 to 110 euros per night depending on season and availability. More elaborate tents or cabins cost more, but the basic concept remains the same.

For what you get, privacy, uniqueness, calm surroundings, and access to beautiful nature, the price feels fair. You are not paying for luxury, you are paying for atmosphere and experience.

Final Thoughts on Back To Basic Zwaanshoek

Overall, our stay at Back To Basic Zwaanshoek was genuinely positive. It delivered exactly what we hoped for: a short escape from routine, minimal distractions, and a unique overnight experience. It is not perfect, and it does not try to be. That is precisely why it works.

If you are looking for a simple, honest, and memorable stay in North Holland, this place is absolutely worth considering.
