Bakkerij Sonnemans in Burgh Haamstede, located at Hogeweg 13, 4328 PA Burgh Haamstede, The Netherlands, is one of the most beloved and authentic bakeries in Zeeland. Bakkerij Sonnemans is known for traditional craftsmanship, handwritten charm, and of course its famous Zeeuwse bolussen. During our stay near Grand Hotel Ter Duin, we made it a mission to visit Bakkerij Sonnemans specifically for those iconic cinnamon spirals. For many people, including us, Bakkerij Sonnemans is not just another bakery, it is the best in the region.

On February 15, 2026, we walked about 1,000 meters, roughly a 10 to 15 minute walk, from Grand Hotel Ter Duin to Bakkerij Sonnemans. It is an easy and pleasant route through Burgh Haamstede, making it the perfect stop during a relaxed weekend in Zeeland.

A Small Bakery with Big Character

When arriving at Bakkerij Sonnemans, you first pass what appears to be a small Bed and Breakfast, likely connected to the hotel concept behind the bakery. We did not eat at the hotel, but it adds a unique atmosphere to the property.

Opening the door of Bakkerij Sonnemans feels like stepping into a time capsule. The interior is small, cozy, and traditional. You briefly stand in line while surrounded by local products. There is a small candy corner, local gifts, and even locally brewed beer, including Zeeuwse Bolus beer. While that beer is a fun novelty, we came for one thing, the bolussen.

As we moved closer to the counter, we could clearly see the fresh bread and pastries displayed. That visual alone makes choosing difficult. Eventually, we decided on six Zeeuwse bolussen. Two for us, and the rest for family, including my girlfriend, my sister, my mother, and my father. For six bolussen, we paid around 9 euros, which equals approximately 9.75 USD depending on the exchange rate at the time. That price for handmade regional specialties feels fair and authentic.

The service at Bakkerij Sonnemans was friendly and straightforward. No unnecessary sales talk, just genuine local hospitality.

Zeeuwse Bolussen, The Star of the place

Bakkerij Sonnemans is especially famous for its Zeeuwse bolussen. These sticky, cinnamon sugar spirals are a traditional Zeeland specialty. What makes Bakkerij Sonnemans stand out is the artisanal approach. The bolussen are made in a traditional way, and that texture and flavor are noticeably different from mass produced versions.

People travel specifically to Bakkerij Sonnemans for these bolussen. Many reviews online mention that these are the best in Zeeland. The balance between cinnamon, sugar, and dough is spot on. They are slightly crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and packed with flavor.

Besides bolussen, Bakkerij Sonnemans offers traditional bread, pastries, breakfast options, and lunch bites. There is a very small indoor seating area where you can enjoy coffee and fresh bread. However, the outdoor terrace is much larger and offers plenty of space. On sunny days, that terrace becomes a lively and relaxed place to sit down.

Opening Hours in February and Practical Information

According to the information from OpschouwenDuiveland, Bakkerij Sonnemans is closed on Monday and Tuesday, and open from Wednesday through Sunday from 08:00 AM to 05:00 PM. However, some online sources show slight differences for certain weekdays. During our visit on February 15, 2026, the bakery was open as expected. It is always wise to double check online before visiting, especially outside the high tourist season.

In February, Burgh Haamstede is quieter than in summer, which makes visiting Bakkerij Sonnemans even more enjoyable. No long tourist lines, just locals and a relaxed atmosphere.

A Family Business Since 1917

One of the reasons Bakkerij Sonnemans feels so authentic is its history. The bakery has existed since 1917. In the 1970s, it was taken over by the Sonnemans family. Today, it is run by Mathieu Sonnemans and Dorothé Sonnemans, together with their children. That family ownership shows in everything, from the traditional recipes to the welcoming vibe.

Bakkerij Sonnemans is not a modern chain bakery. It is a family business rooted in craftsmanship. That is exactly why it remains relevant and popular after more than a century.

Behind the bakery, the family opened Hotel Bij de Bakker in the summer of 2021. The hotel is designed in the same style as the bakery and even includes a small World War II themed collection. We did not stay there, but it is a unique addition. The hotel makes sense if you want to fully immerse yourself in the atmosphere, especially because breakfast literally comes fresh from the bakery.

Reviews, What People Love and What They Mention

Online reviews for Bakkerij Sonnemans are strong. Google ratings are high, with thousands of reviews. Tripadvisor ratings are also solid, with a high average score.

People praise the bolussen, the authentic atmosphere, and the friendly service. Many visitors describe Bakkerij Sonnemans as the best bakery in Burgh Haamstede. The terrace and the traditional interior also receive positive feedback.

Some minor criticism in reviews focuses on limited indoor seating and occasional waiting times during peak tourist season. However, most visitors agree that the quality outweighs those small inconveniences.

Why You Should Visit Bakkerij Sonnemans

Bakkerij Sonnemans is not necessarily a full day destination. It is not a large attraction with tours or exhibitions. Instead, it is the perfect high quality stop during a weekend in Zeeland.

If you are staying at Grand Hotel Ter Duin, like we did, it is almost mandatory to walk over to Bakkerij Sonnemans for fresh bolussen. Combine it with a beach walk, a visit to the dunes, or exploring Burgh Haamstede. Bakkerij Sonnemans works best as a flavorful highlight within a broader Zeeland experience.

Would I visit Burgh Haamstede just for Bakkerij Sonnemans? Possibly yes, if you are a true bakery enthusiast. But for most travelers, it fits perfectly as part of a relaxed coastal weekend.

Final Thoughts on Bakkerij Sonnemans

This bakery in Burgh Haamstede represents everything you hope for in a traditional Dutch bakery. History since 1917, a family run business, famous Zeeuwse bolussen, fair pricing, friendly service, and a charming terrace. After spending a weekend near Grand Hotel Ter Duin, walking over to Bakkerij Sonnemans for fresh bolussen felt like the right decision.

Sometimes the best experiences are not grand or luxurious. Sometimes they are found in a small bakery with cinnamon sugar on your fingers.
