Gulbrakka Basecamp Glomfjord was our final stop after one of the longest and most chaotic travel days of our entire Norway trip. We arrived in Glomfjord after roughly 12 hours and 20 minutes of driving from Å in Lofoten, simply because we missed the ferry to Bodø. What followed was an almost surreal navigation route through areas that felt barely existent on the map, narrow roads, endless detours, and a growing sense of fatigue that only a long Scandinavian road trip can give you.
By the time we reached Gulbrakka Basecamp, it was late. Very late. And honestly, we were mentally done. That moment when you just want a bed, a roof, and silence. Luckily, this basecamp delivered exactly that.
Arrival in Glomfjord, Unexpected but Warm
When we arrived, we noticed something unexpected. We did not receive check in instructions through Airbnb chat. Instead, the owner had asked a group of French travelers who were already staying there if they could help guide us around the property. At first, that surprised us. After such a long day, you expect clear digital instructions waiting for you.
But here is the thing. The French travelers were incredibly kind. They took the time to explain everything clearly, showed us the shared spaces, explained the kitchen, living room, sauna area, and how the house works. Within minutes, we knew exactly what we needed to know. So genuinely, thank you to them. Sometimes human interaction beats any automated message.
Shared Spaces Done the Right Way
Gulbrakka Basecamp Glomfjord is very much a shared accommodation, and that is important to know upfront. The living room, kitchen, and bathrooms are shared spaces. The bathrooms are located in the basement, combined with the sauna area, which already sets a certain Nordic tone.
That said, the bedroom itself is private, and honestly, that made all the difference. After such a long and exhausting travel day, having your own private room is gold. The room was small, yes, but perfectly fine. No unnecessary luxury, just functional, clean, and comfortable. Exactly what you want at the end of a road trip.
The beds were surprisingly good. Comfortable, supportive, and quiet. We slept incredibly well, which says a lot after a day like this.
A Living Room That Feels Like a Home
One thing that really stood out was the living room. It did not feel like a hostel common area. It genuinely felt like someone’s home. There was space, warmth, furniture that looked lived in, and a relaxed atmosphere. You could easily sit there for hours, talk with other travelers, read, or just unwind.
The kitchen was full size and well equipped. Everything you need is there. Pots, pans, plates, cutlery, coffee equipment, the basics are covered. It was reasonably clean and functional. That said, the kitchen and interior are clearly old. This is not modern Scandinavian minimalism. It is practical, worn in, and clearly has a history. Personally, I did not mind this at all. It fits the basecamp vibe perfectly.
The Basecamp Feeling
Gulbrakka Basecamp Glomfjord really lives up to its name. This is not a luxury hotel. This is a place for people who travel, explore, hike, ski, and drive long distances through Northern Norway. It feels like a hub for adventure, a place where stories come together in the evening and everyone is tired for the right reasons.
You can tell that this place is designed for people who come here to experience nature. Whether that is hiking, fishing, ski touring, or glacier adventures with Meløy Adventure nearby.
A Tip That Turned Into an Adventure
Before we went to bed, two French travelers gave us a hiking tip for the next day. They told us about a route near Glomfjord that sounded adventurous but manageable. What they did not fully prepare us for was the access road.
The next day, we followed that advice and ended up driving into a two kilometer long tunnel, one lane, no asphalt, rough gravel surface, and active construction work. This tunnel felt almost unreachable. No phone signal, no room to turn around, and absolutely no margin for error.
Glomfjord Lake and Dam
Glomfjord lake and dam adventure is one of those experiences that quietly turns into a core travel memory. What looks like a remote industrial village in Northern Norway suddenly opens up into a dramatic landscape of mountains, water, concrete, gravel roads, and pure adrenaline. This part of Nordland combines raw nature with massive human engineering, and getting there already feels like an adventure on its own.
Driving a Peugeot 208 through that tunnel was honestly one of the most stressful driving moments of the entire trip. The car could not move into the edge of the tunnel, because it would literally get stuck. And being stuck there without reception was not an option. But that is also what makes places like Gulbrakka Basecamp special. You are not staying in a polished tourist bubble. You are right in the middle of real Northern Norway, where adventure does not always come with safety rails.
A Solid Overnight Stop in Northern Norway
Looking back, Gulbrakka Basecamp Glomfjord was a very good and pleasant experience. The stay was simple, warm, functional, and exactly what we needed at that moment. The shared setup worked well, the private bedroom gave us peace, and the overall atmosphere felt welcoming and authentic.
After such a long and chaotic travel day, this basecamp offered rest, comfort, and a sense of arriving somewhere safe. And sometimes, that is worth more than anything else.
Would I Stay Here Again
Yes. Without hesitation. Especially if you are traveling through Nordland, heading to or coming from Lofoten, or planning outdoor activities around Svartisen and Glomfjord. Gulbrakka Basecamp Glomfjord is not about perfection. It is about being real, practical, and human. And that worked perfectly for us.
